A closed up and graffitied Unocal Corporation/Unocal 76 Filling Station in the Detroit City Proper.

Unocal Corporation was the official Fuel and Motor Oil sponsor of NASCAR from its founding in 1948, up until 2003. After 2003, Sunoco became the official Fuel sponsor of NASCAR, and ExxonMobil, and their Mobil 1 brand of Motor Oil became their official Motor Oil sponsor.

For many years, at each turn at Daytona International Speedway; watchtowers with the top of these towers (the viewing area) were shaped and painted in the livery of the Unocal 76 Ball, and sponsored by and erected with the consent of Unocal Corporation.

Former NASCAR Crew Chief and Team Owner Ray Evernham currently has the tops of one of these watchtowers in the shape and livery of the Unocal 76 Ball in his personal collection of Automobile, Automobile Racing, and Petroliana memorabilia.

For a good portion of the 1980’s, Bill Elliott, while with Melling Racing, and driving his highly-esteemed #9 Fox-Platform Ford Thunderbird, Unocal Corporation was one of Bill Elliott’s sponsors.

During the 1970’s, 1980’s, and the early 1990’s; and in part and parcel, while at times, using Bill Elliott and his #9 Ford Thunderbird in their marketing, Unocal Corporation had utilized the slogan “Go With the Spirit…the Spirit of 76” in all of their advertising.

In 1997, Unocal Corporation had sold their Western operations to Conoco (later ConocoPhillips upon the merger of the latter two companies in 2002).

In 2005, Chevron Corporation had bought out the remainder of Unocal Corporation; marking the end of the long and storied history of Unocal Corporation.

As of the present day, during the time of writing this post; ConocoPhillips, and a division of Saudi Arabian-based Oil company known as the Arab-American Oil Company (ARAMCO) called Motiva Enterprises; jointly own the rights to the “Union 76” and the “76” brand names.
