Pool of very typical Freightliner XC diesel pusher RV chassis with the very typical Cummins diesel engine on the property of the Forest River Diesel Motorhome Manufacturing Facility In Elkhart, Indiana.
With Caterpillar having exited the On-Highway Truck engine business in 2008 at the advent of the more stringent emissions standards for diesel engines that were put into place, Cummins currently holds a monopoly on the On-Highway Truck engine business; and therefore, there isn’t as much of a variety of powertrain choices in motorhomes as there was a decade ago (as of the time of writing this post).
This also includes Gasoline Class A motorhomes, with Workhorse Custom Chassis (the company who had purchased the design and the rights to build the P-Chassis from General Motors in 1998) having exited the RV chassis business in 2011, General Motors having discontinued their Big Block V8 engine sometime in the late 2000’s due to lack of demand and increasing fuel economy and emissions regulations for Gasoline engines; thus leaving the Ford Motor Company and their Modular V10 engine the sole Gasoline Class A chassis and the Modular V10 engine the one and only gasoline engine that powers all Gasoline Class A motorhomes as of the time of writing this post.
Also, Spartan Motors produces diesel pusher chassis for the higher-end, premium RV market that requires GVWs ranging from 30,000 lbs. to 80,000 lbs., leaving Freightliner the only chassis manufacturer for Entry-Level and Mid-Range diesel pushers. Freightliner, however; does produce their SL chassis to compete with Spartan’s higher GVW K2 and K3 chassis.
