CBS Sports Telecast Of An MLB Game In 1986

I never knew that CBS Sports had televised any MLB Games before they had formally acquired rights to the league in December, 1988 with coverage beginning with the 1990-1991 season.

We’re talking the television rights where during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, CBS had lost billions of dollars for televising fewer games than NBC and ABC ever did prior to CBS acquiring the rights to the league.

This loss of revenue that CBS had endured during the time they had held the rights to the MLB could have been a factor for not having quite enough cash to outbid the upstart FOX Television Network for the NFL AFC rights beginning with the 1994-1995 season, television rights that up until this time; CBS had held since 1956.

Ironically, it would be FOX who would acquire the rights for the MLB from ABC (who, in turn; had acquired their rights back from CBS) in 1995, effective beginning with the 1995 season; and became the exclusive terrestrial television outlet for the league beginning with the 2001 season.
