A photo of CBS Sports’s coverage of the Belmont Stakes Horse Race, with Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder working as an analyst during this horse race from 1977 until CBS had lost the rights to televise this horse race in 1985 to ABC.
Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder’s birth name is Dimetrios Georgios Synodinos. Jimmy had anglicized his surname to ‘Snyder’ at some point in time, and Jimmy’s family can be traced to the Greek island of Chios; off the Anatolian coast. Chios is where Jimmy’s ancestors had left for the new world.
ABC began televising this Horse Race starting in 1986.
Charlsie Cantey, who had started with CBS in 1977 to work as a reporter for the horse races that CBS had the rights to; had followed the television rights to these horse races to ABC, and had worked for ABC until 2000; when ABC had in turn; lost the rights to these horse races to NBC. And then Charlsie Cantey had moved to NBC from that point forward, to again follow the television rights to these horse races.
While at CBS, Charlsie Cantey had served as Phyllis George’s replacement on The NFL Today during Phyllis’s maternity leave. Phyllis George would never return to CBS Sports, and would instead take a job as a news anchor at CBS’s owned & operated station in Chicago, WBBM-TV once Phyllis was able to return to work.
Charlsie Cantey had also contributed to CBS’s coverage of the NBA while at CBS, and had also contributed to CBS’s coverage of the America’s Cup sailboat race when CBS had the rights to that at one time.
Brent Musburger had served as the Trophy Presenter for CBS’s coverage of these horse races from 1982 up until CBS’s last year of holding the rights in 1985.
Jim McKay has served both capacities simultaneously as a host and a Trophy Presenter for these horse races at ABC, and Al Michaels has also co-hosted these horse races with Jim McKay at ABC.
ABC News anchor Robin Roberts, while working for ABC’s sports department and for the cable channel that ABC has owned since 1984-ESPN, has worked as a reporter for ABC’s coverage of these horse races from 1991 up until ABC had lost the rights to these horse races to NBC in 2000.
Lesley Visser, another replacement for Phyllis George for many of Phyllis’s capacities at CBS; who had moved to ABC Sports when CBS had lost the rights to the NFL to FOX in 1993; had also served as a reporter for these horse races at ABC alongside Charlsie Cantey and Robin Roberts.
