If General Motors And Isuzu Had Each Owned Fifty Percent Of The School Bus Manufacturer

In a prior post, I had written about how if I were in charge at General Motors; I would orchestrate GM and Isuzu each purchasing a 50% stake in the School Bus manufacturer Blue Bird in a move similar to when IH/Navistar had purchased Ward/AmTran in 1991 and when Daimler/Freightliner had purchased Thomas in 1998. And I would provide more details about this business deal in a later post.

This is the post in which I provide more details about how I would orchestrate GM and Isuzu each purchasing a 50% stake in Blue Bird.

The deal would greatly leverage Isuzu’s expertise and specialization in producing Medium & Heavy-Duty trucks and buses.

The Vision/CV200 conventional style bus would be strictly available on the chassis & cowl version of the Chevrolet Kodiak/GMC TopKick C6500/C7500 and would be strictly available with the Isuzu 6HK1-TC Turbo Diesel and the customer’s choice of the Allison 2000 or the Allison/World MD3060; the Blue Bird TC/2000 lighter-duty transit style bus would be strictly available on an Isuzu stripped chassis based on the Isuzu Elf/N-Series with the 4HK1-TC Turbo Diesel Engine and the Aisin A465 transmission, both the Front Engine and Rear Engine versions of the All American transit style bus would be strictly available on chassis based on the Isuzu Forward/F-Series with the Isuzu 6HK1-TC and the customer’s choice of the customer’s choice of the Allison 2000 or the Allison/World MD3060; and the TC/1000 lightest-duty transit style bus would be strictly available on a chassis based on the Isuzu NPR ECOMAX Isuzu 4JJ1-TC Turbo Diesel engine and the Aisin A460 transmission. Blue Bird would discontinue their Type A Cutaway buses much like how IC Corp hadn’t manufactured a Type A bus since the Vanguard in the early 1990’s. Blue Bird’s products would again be as overbuilt as they used to be until the late 1990’s, quality over quantity would once again be Blue Bird’s business model; and Blue Bird would return to using the higher quality vinyl on the student seats that they used to use until the early 2000’s and would return to using their heritage entrance door with the rounded windows that they had previously used until the mid-1990’s. customers could be convinced of how durable, reliable, and trouble free Isuzu’s diesel engines are, of Isuzu’s sterling reputation with their diesel engines, and that Isuzu’s diesel engines would do the job even better than Navistar’s diesels, Cummins diesels, and Caterpillar diesels. Customers could be convinced that Isuzu is the “Japanese Navistar” because of Isuzu currently exiting the light vehicle business and concentrating strictly on building their Medium & Heavy-Duty trucks and their diesel engines much like how International Harvester had exited the light truck, farm equipment, and lawn equipment businesses; decided that their core businesses would be their Medium & Heavy-Duty trucks and their diesel engines and had changed their name to Navistar International upon this transition. Isuzu has just as rich of a Medium-Heavy truck history and as rich of a diesel engine history as Navistar. Driving an Isuzu Medium-Duty truck is more exciting than driving a Rodeo, Amigo, or a Trooper and driving International’s Medium & Heavy Trucks was and is more exciting than driving International’s light-duty trucks (including the Scout). Customers can be persuaded to imagine a Rodeo, Amigo, or Trooper doing what these buses on the Isuzu chassis could do and also imagine what an IH pickup, Travelall, or Scout doing what International’s School Bus chassis always has been able to do-customers would easily be convinced that these companies’ light-duty trucks would ultimately fail at doing what these Medium-Duty School Bus chassis can do. Regarding Blue Bird’s Commercial Bus product line, the Q-Bus and CS would be replaced with North American spec versions of the Isuzu Erga, Erga Mio, and the Gala Mio buses. Saint-Gobain Sekurit would be chosen as the supplier for the windshield on the Blue Bird School Buses and the wired heated windshield would be used on the Blue Bird School Buses. Saint-Gobain Vertex would be chosen as the supplier for the glass on the entry/exit door on the Blue Bird School Buses, and Guardian would be chosen as the supplier for all the side glass and the glass on the rear emergency door and the rear end cap of the Blue Bird School Buses. Saint-Gobain Sekurit would also be chosen as the supplier for the windshields of the captive imported Isuzu commercial buses that would be sold as Blue Birds in the North American markets, and the Climacoat windshield would be used on the commercial buses.

Reserection Of The GM B-Platform

Also if I were in charge at General Motors and held the appropriate position, I would resurrect the GM B-Platform. Production would continue where it left off at the Arlington, Texas assembly plant. The Willow Run, Michigan assembly plant would also be retooled to resume production of the GM B-Platform where it left off at this plant, too.

The reserected GM B-Platform would be a retro-themed vehicle, would obviously continue to be a frame on body design; and the body would fabricated out of aluminum using similar techniques as the new aluminum-bodied Ford F-150. The vehicles built on this platform would be available as either a traditional station wagon or a 5-door hatchback. Besides being a retro-themed vehicle, the Caprice being once again available with the 9C1 Police package and the Taxi package, and the Fleetwood 5-door hatchback being available with the Limousine, Hearse, and Flowercar provision packages. The 5-door hatchback models would feature the backlite with the bent sides as a homage to the 1977-1984 B-platform coupes, and the 5-door hatchback Caprice models would also feature the 3 rectangular taillights on the back end as homage to the 1977-1990 Caprice sedan. The new B-platform would be built solely with a plug-in system similar to the Volt where the ICE doesn’t actually power the car, but just acts as a generator to the electric motor and the batteries. The new B-platform would be styled after the 1977-1990 bodystyle of B-platform cars. The following engines that would be available would be a modified LT1 to run on gasoline and E85, DOHC, dual VVT, and cylinder deactivation, a modified LT4 to run on gasoline and E85, DOHC, dual VVT, and cylinder deactivation; and a modified LV3 V6 to run on gasoline and E85, DOHC, and dual VVT (Taxi cab only). More correctly, the Chevrolet and Buick traditional wagon and 5-door would be powered by the modified LT1 while the Cadillac would be solely available with the modified LT4 V8. Digital readout instrument cluster w/ HUD included (optional on the Chevrolet and Buick but standard on the Cadillac), rectangular, horizontal, 3D instrument cluster (standard), the car being available solely with the quintessential front bench seat; the design of the frame being intended for rigidity and durability in addition to new technology being applied to help contribute to aerodynamics and a lower center of gravity, the design of the suspension system being a front double wishbone design and the rear being a multi-link design, the design of the tailgate vacating into the roof once open and the electric motor on the traditional wagon being similar to the B and C platform wagons of the 1970’s, the design of the sunroof on the traditional wagon being a panoramic sunroof paying some homage to the Vista sunroofs of wagons of old not only being engineered to prevent leaks in addition to contributing to a lesser amount NVH when closed and ensuring NVH standards when closed, but also, for the glass to withstand the weight of any object(s) placed on the roof rack in addition to being able to withstand any rollover. The traditional wagons would also feature a power folding 3^rd row seat that folds down at the push of a button and vice versa at the push of a button. The wagons would also be designed to have a towing capacity of 7,000-8,000 lbs. The resurrected B-Platform would also be sold in Australia to replace the Commodore, Statesman, and the Australian Caprice, a coupe utility derivative would be developed on the new B-Platform for the Australian market; and the resurrected B-Platform would also be sold in China for executive transport purposes. Faurecia would be chosen to make the whole entire interior assembly-dashboard, seats, door panels, carpeting, and headliner because of their capability to design very unique interior components; would be able to build the interior with elements from the 1970’s, 1980’s, and the 1990’s with a few modern touches such as the lighted dashboard stitching to contribute to the ambient lighting, and heated armrests on the door panels and on the armrest of the front bench seat once the center of the seat has been folded down. Delphi would be chosen as the supplier for both the instrument cluster, utilizing their brand new 3D instrument cluster; and also the infotainment systems. Saint-Gobain Sekurit would be chosen as the supplier of all of the glass because of their technology that would help breathe new life into the iconic large, frame-on-body car. A European-based glass company would be chosen to do the entire glass for vehicles on the GM B-Platform, and their products that would be used in this vehicle would the Climacoat windshield with integrated antennas, hydrophobic glass for the front door glass, Coolcoat acoustic glass for the rear door glass and in the case of the traditional wagon models-also the D-pillar; and this European-based glass company would also be awarded the vista sunroof with Climacoat technology on the traditional wagons (the heated part of the vista sunroof would actuated at the same time the windshield would be activated by the push of a single button to activate both and snow & ice would be cleared from the vista sunroof not only to make the sunroof visible during the winter months; but also so that the consumer wouldn’t have to clear any ice and snow from the vista sunroof, and also so that the vista sunroof does it’s part in reducing the cabin temperature during the summer months), the unique backlite on the 5-door hatchback models, the backlite for the clamshell tailgate on the wagon models; and all the glass for the Chinese market version, and all of the glass for the Australian 5-door hatchback and traditional wagon versions. The Australian coupe utility version, however; would use glass supplied by an American-based automotive glass company, and their products that would be used in the Australian coupe-utility would be the Sungate windshield, the Safe & Sound glass for the door glass and the Solextra Vision for the rear “back of cab” glass.

I would like for the resurrected B-Platform to run on Hydrogen, but to date, that still doesn’t seem commercially viable for a mass production car.

An Opel/Holden/Vauxhall/Subaru Van On The Legacy/Outback Platform

If I were in charge at General Motors and held the appropriate position, I would develop a van that would be a joint venture between Subaru/Fuji Heavy Industries and General Motors that would be based off the Legacy/Outback, would be jointly developed by Subaru and GM’s European & Australian operations; would be sold primarily in the Japanese, European, and Oceanic markets and in the United States in smaller numbers as a niche vehicle. This vehicle would also be partially developed by the Australian design team under the same strategy as the Holden Commodore for many years having been Australianized versions of the Opel Rekord E, Opel Omegas A & B, and Opel Senators A & B. The van would have the same higher ground clearance that the Outback has. This vehicle would be designed to compete worldwide with Volkswagen EuroVan/Transporter, Renault Trafic, Mercedes-Benz Vito/Viano, Toyota Alphard, and the Nissan Elgrand. The vehicle’s exterior would be styled by Bertone in Turin, Italy to look similar to the Transporter, Vito/Viano; and the Trafic while the interior would be styled by Saab and would feature the Saab signature wrap-around dashboard with an aircraft-inspired instrument cluster that would include a turbo PSI gage, and the ignition switch placed on the center console. Some safety features that would be designed and built into the vehicle would be the structural rigidity that Subaru and Saab are both known for, Saab’s active head restraints, driver, front passenger, side torso and side curtain airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, shoulder belt airbags for occupants in the 2^nd and 3^rd row seats, seat cushion airbags for the driver and front passenger, and a rear seat center airbag that would be similar to what is already featured on the Lambda CUVs. The U.S, European, and Australian spec versions of the vehicle would be available with the EJ255 turbocharged, horizontally opposed 4 cylinder and the 2.0 liter horizontally opposed 4 cylinder turbo diesel, and the Japanese Domestic Version would be equipped with the EJ206 turbocharged, horizontally opposed 4 cylinder and the 2.0 liter horizontally opposed 4 cylinder turbo diesel. The statement of requirements for the vehicle would include that it be able to withstand temperatures as cold as -200 degrees and as warm as 200 degrees, that the HVAC cool and heat the interior to 72 degrees in temperatures as cold as -200 degrees and as warm as 200 degrees; that the engine and starter should be able to turn over at a temperature as cold as -200 degrees and that the engine cooling system perform flawlessly at 200 degrees without overheating. The vehicle should also possess a torsional rigidity of 60,000 Newton Meters/degrees. And the vehicle would be expected to ford through 30 feet of water at 15 miles an hour and have approach, departure, and breakover angles measured at 37 degrees, 35 degrees, and 23 degrees. Make a long story short; this van would be designed to be as rough and rugged as a Jeep, Land Rover, or a Hummer while remaining true to its European design and retaining European on-road driving characteristics; and would be highly overbuilt just like how Mercedes-Benz used to overbuild their cars. Because dashboard televisions are legal in Japan, a windshield antenna for the television would be necessary for the Japanese market. AGC’s IR & UV Cut, and Acoustic Glass for the windshield, door glass, and D-pillar; water-repellent door glass for the and the front doors, a coated heated front windshield, and an embedded DTV glass antenna with a heated wiper/camera area for the Japanese market. Toyota Boshoku would be chosen as the supplier for the seats because of their expertise in making the executive 2^nd row seats for the Toyota Alphard (only this vehicle will be required to have 3 executive seats across the 2^nd row rather than 2 because this vehicle would be required to carry 8 instead of 7 people) and also the rear seat relaxation system for the 3^rd row seat in addition to the 3^rd row seat still being designed to fold flat into the floor for cargo purposes; and also because of Toyota Boshoku already having developed the expertise in developing seat cushions with the SRS cushion restraint already in use in some Toyota products. Faurecia would be chosen as the supplier for the dashboard, center console, door panels, and the interior carpeting; Siemens would be chosen as the supplier for the instrument cluster and the infotainment systems, and Delphi would be chosen as the supplier for the HVAC unit because of their expertise in development of the single HVAC system that covers 3 zones and consists of a partitioned evaporator and heater core in a partitioned under-dash HVAC case that feeds an external multiple rear duct system, where a strategically located second blower motor maintains the auxiliary airflow. As this design of HVAC system would be preferred for this vehicle-the Legacy based van project. Think of this van as a Volkswagen Transporter/Eurovan, Renault Trafic, or a Mercedes-Benz Vito/Viano on a Legacy/Outback chassis. Subaru’s expertise in making an off-road capable, rough and rugged passenger car chassis while delivering European ride and handling on the road, and the Legacy’s popularity in Europe and in the Oceanic market are the main reasons as to why jointly develop the vehicle with Subaru and to base the vehicle on the Legacy/Outback platform. The Opel version would be named the Blitz after a line of vans that Opel had made from 1952-1975, the Saturn version would be called the Margrave (named after monarchial title), the Vauxhall version would be called the Viscount (also named after another monarchial title), the Holden version would be called the Brigadier; and the Subaru version would be called the Vaca (named after one of the Florida Keys).

Who Gives A Hoot About Sports

As you are certainly aware if you’ve been following this blog, I don’t give a hoot about mainstream sports (not counting NASCAR).

I mean, really; who gives a hoot about sports.

Also, who gives a hoot about children being involved in sports, children going to college to play on the college or university’s sports teams; and the so-called “soccer mom” chauffeuring their children around in their Minivans, Crossover Utility Vehicles; or any other personal vehicle they may own.

In fact, who really gives a hoot about going to college; period. I personally don’t.

Equally important in this post, parents who don’t give their kids a choice about what vehicle they get as their first car; hand them down the family car that they’ve owned for many years, possibly as long ever since the children were little babies, infants, or toddlers; parents who have a rule where the children could work, earn, and save enough money for their first vehicle but they’re still being handed down the family car no matter what or they don’t drive at all; and they can buy their own car once their in college or have moved out of the house entirely. And parents who just buy their children any radon vehicle without giving them a choice as to what they get as their first vehicle upon them receiving their driver’s licenses are overmodest and conscientious.

Watching a sporting event on television…big whoop for the most part. I don’t give a hoot about watching sporting events on cable television channels such as ESPN and NBC and FOX’s sports cable channels have been en vogue for the past decade and a half as of the time of the writing of this post. A sporting event not being televised by FOX, but by the elder 3 networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC); whoever is the President of the 3 elder network’s sports departments (such as when Neal Pilson was the President of CBS Sports and when Roone Arledge was the President of both ABC’s News & Sports departments), and the people and equipment behind the scenes producing the sporting event are all more important than the actual sporting event itself.

As I have already stated in other posts, vehicle and ham and shortwave radio-related things triumph in importance over sports and typical and common family values.

May driving a Caprice wagon or a diesel Suburban with 2 other people sitting next to me in the front bench seat, driving a Volkswagen/Audi solo; driving a School Bus, being involved at a radio or terrestrial television transmitter site; listening to a shortwave radio, and communicating on a ham radio triumph over children being involved in sports and common family values.

Such exemplifications are the latest generation of the Pollard Basketball family to play the icky, yucky sport in school; go to college to play the icky, yucky sport; be handed down the family car, a minivan no less; as their first vehicle, the parents having used that awful minivan to chauffeur their icky Basketball-playing boys to the sporting event; the parents holding onto that older, higher-mileage minivan to pay for their sons’ college them eating at home all the time in lieu of going out to eat; and how gregarious this family is.

These younglings from the latest generation of the Pollard Basketball family are listening to weirdo music in these examples. And, I would be closely examining one of the Pollard boys’ heads with a magnifying glass to ensure that his hair will someday grow back.

Pau Gasol runs an (icky, yucky) Basketball academy based in Barcelona, Spain similarly to how Pat Burke does in Orlando, Florida; for students from around the world to attend, which I am personally not fond of. I don’t think that Basketball Academies like these for kids should never exist. And Pau Gasol wears ugly athletic clothing by Nike, who I think sponsors this Basketball academy; and I am not personally fond of athletic clothing by Nike, Adidas, and Reebok either.

The PTO unit on the Range Rover was, however; only available as a Dealer-Installed-Option/Accessory whereas the PTO unit on the Series/Defender always has been available as a factory option.

Sure, the studio in one of the house plans linked about would make a nice private suite; but there is no way my paternal grandmother would walk up that long flight of stairs just to get to what would be her personal suite. There’s no way my parents and I would ever want to walk up that long flight of stairs just to access that studio as well.

Land Rover Forward Control Model

Similarly to how Jeep had produced the FC-150 and FC-170 Forward Control trucks, Land Rover, too; has produced a Forward Control model.

Land Rover’s Forward Control model shared many parts with the conventional Land Rover and with he Rover P3 & P4 saloon cars. In fact, the Land Rover Forward Control’s chassis was pretty much a conventional Land Rover chassis modified to accommodate a cab over wheels. The Land Rover Forward Control’s cab doors and windshield are also selfsame to the conventional Land Rover’s doors. This modified Land Rover chassis, though; was only available with large-sized wheels and tires that caused the vehicle to have a very high ground clearance.

The Land Rover Forward Control was officially known as the FC101 (for Forward Control, 101″ wheelbase).

The engines installed in the Land Rover Forward Control were pretty much the same as in the conventional Land Rover: 4-cylinder gasoline/petrol and diesel engines, intake over exhaust (IOE) inline-6; and the Buick/Rover V8.

The Land Rover Forward Control was primarily designed and built for the British Military and the militaries of the Commonwealth nations; although some were made available to the civilian market on the British homeland and in Australia.

In the civilian marketplace, the Land Rover Forward Control was marketed as a vehicle that could carry a larger load off road due to the vehicle’s forward control design that allowed for increased cargo capacity and a tighter turning radius, a load greater than a conventional Land Rover pickup truck model; and the ability to go off-road that a comparable Ford of Europe, Bedford; or Leyland lorry didn’t have.

All-in-all, the Land Rover Forward Control was the end result of the brilliant work conducted by Rover’s Research & Development department.

The Land Rover Forward Control did spawn a newer successor in the late 1980’s called the Llama. The Llama was produced strictly for the British military, and Land Rover did not want to make the Llama available to the civilian market out of fear that the vehicle would compete with the Mercedes-Benz Unimog.

In the end, Land Rover did not win the order by the British Military to produce the Llama. Instead, Land Rover chose a vehicle that was originally designed and produced by what was Chrysler’s European division and later by Renault; and this Chrysler-designed and Renault-built vehicle suffered poorly in terms of reliability during it’s intended military service

Jeep had also marketed their Forward Control model as a pickup truck with Jeep’s legendary and unquestionable off-road know-how, and carry a larger load off road due to the vehicle’s forward control design that allowed for increased cargo capacity and a tighter turning radius. And indeed, the Jeep Forward Control model had a greater cargo capacity than the conventional Jeep pickup truck that was produced from 1947-1963; and even the Jeep Full-Size J-Series pickup truck that had just been introduced by Kaiser during the Jeep FC’s production run.
